METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it has not penetrated the surface yet, we might be able to get it off by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving consistency compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once that happens, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. Then we move the scraper slowly under the gum and the whole piece should peel right off of the concrete.

The above method is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is already smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we will not use high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses more pressure than needed to clean concrete. These surfaces can be destroyed a lot easier than people think, especially if they’re only 1-2 years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our professional gum removal service.
